LIghthouse keepers will never be memorialized like soldiers or cops because they didn’t kill anyone (as part of their job) but they’re like, heroes who saved untold lives through discipline and self-sacrifice doing an impossible lonely job and I’m worked up about  it

Clinging to a swaying tower in freezing, driving rain, risking death by everything from pneumonia to a fall to a fucking lightning strike to keep the lantern going when you don’t even KNOW if someone is out on the water!! Working! Class! Heroes!

Love very much the sentiment of this post and also love the specific wording of “didn’t kill anyone (as part of their job)” because what lighthouse keepers did off hours is their own business

My dad and I once had a disagreement over him using the adage “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”

I said, “That’s just not true. Sometimes what doesn’t kill you leaves you brittle and injured or traumatized.”

He stopped and thought about that for a while. He came back later, and said, “It’s like wood glue.”

He pointed to my bookshelf, which he helped me salvage a while ago. He said, “Do you remember how I explained that, once we used the wood glue on them, the shelves would actually be stronger than they were before they broke?”

I did.

“But before we used the wood glue, those shelves were broken. They couldn’t hold up shit. If you had put books on them, they would have collapsed. And that wood glue had to set awhile. If we put anything on them too early, they would have collapsed just the same as if we’d never fixed them at all. You’ve got to give these things time to set.”

It sounded like a pretty good metaphor to me, but one thing I did pick up on was that whatever broke those shelves, that’s not the thing that made them stronger. That just broke them. It was being fixed that made them stronger. It was the glue.

So my dad and I agreed, what doesn’t kill you doesn’t actually make you stronger, but healing does. And if you feel like healing hasn’t made you stronger than you were before, you’re probably not done healing. You’ve got to give these things time to set.

Take 1: Kind
I am a travesty of a woman, giving away the pieces of me i know i need to people in worse positions. forgetting constantly that I need the parts of me too. Need a bit of confidence? Here! Dash of shade? Done. I will give you all my spare energy to see you through your darkest night. I will burn myself to keep you warm and when my ashes see you to your finish, I’ll walk off to disappear.

Take 2: Needy
I am the desperate hands searching in the dark, find something to hold onto, never let go. Much like how I love, its all or nothing, never or always. This is the always. I will give you the blue from my skies, and take nothing back. I will give you my breath as wind, still refuse your oxygen.  Smile at the hollow growing in my chest. This love is much like suffocating.

Take 3: Burning
I am stone wall and mortar, never will you see the insides of my dungeons. Didn’t you hear that I was a Savage? Fuck your white horse, if i set my eyes on you there will be no survivors.  I can eat your heart whole, steal your warmth, block out your shine with mine. I am the drug you will never find again. The only apology I will make is that you didn’t sate my appetite.

Take 4: Intelligent
I am head librarian of the grand encyclopedia of intricacies , all the things you never thought people knew. Have questions? Do ask! I have learned all the things I could ever question. If i don’t know it i must learn something about it. Constant curiosity has gotten me into some trouble, but its worth the trouble for the learning.

Take 5: Inhuman
I am High priestess of the altar of the galaxies on nigh, the earthly nymph who rides waves like breaths and runs miles with cheetahs. I am a sight no human can behold in my purest form, for I myself am not human. Any empathy, connection, or need for people has been shown to be knives I mistook as treasure. I grew tired of bleeding for humanity, so I became something else. I couldn’t tell you what I’ve become, just know I’m happier and less hurt

- How would you describe yourself? In parts, always in different faces/takes/faces.// If you were to look at my main traits, they’d seem like five different people (via art3mis-th3-arch3r)

Mcgonagall: gets Harry an expensive racing broom

Also Mcgonagall: that wand needs replacing, Weasley

Whoa there!

Shitpost or not, we do not come after Professor McGonagall on this planet.

It was the best thing a teacher could do in either situation.

You’ve got an abused boy who has never had anything other than the spiders in his cupboard, he is grasping at every new, amazing, thing he finds because it’s all so wonderful? You give him a new, amazing, thing.

You have a boy who grew up in a household where family comes first, where humbleness is key, where taking handouts is seen as embarrassing? You remind that boy that he needs to find a way to replace his broken school supplies and then you sit back and do nothing because you know the family will sort itself out, it always does, and to interfere would be an insult on that perseverance and the family as a whole.

Harry was ecstatic to receive the broom. Ron would have been mortified if his teacher gave him a wand (and so would the rest of the Weasleys).

That’s how you teach.

Not just by knowing which of your kids needs something but by knowing which of your kids will accept something when you give it to them.

Favorite Movies: [14/?] Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
I want you to listen to me very carefully, Harry. You’re not a bad person. You’re a very good person, who bad things have happened to. Besides, the world isn’t split into good people and Death Eaters. We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are.
